Keep Your Battery Alive

Reduce the screen brightness. The brighter the screen, the more energy required to keep it shining. Whether you’re on a laptop, a mobile device, or anything else with a screen, if you need to extend your battery life, dim the brightness as much as you can while maintaining legibility and comfort.

Set the screen timeout to be short.lenovo thinkpad t410 keyboard On laptops and mobile devices, typically there will be a setting that turns off the screen if the device has been idle for a period of time. Setting the idle time as short as possible will help prevent the screen from using up battery life when it’s not needed.

Close unnecessary background applications. Every single program or application that runs on your device uses up energy, even if it’s idling in the background. When you’re done with a program, make sure you exit out of it instead of sending it to the background.

Turn off unnecessary hardware features. lenovo thinkpad t420 keyboard Mobile features like GPS tracking, Bluetooth connection, and Wi-Fi are very taxing on battery life because they never idle and perpetually drain energy. Turn these features off when you’re not using them to use up less battery life.

Avoid demanding activities. Not all programs use the same amount of energy. For example, lenovo thinkpad t510 keyboard video games force your device to work much harder than reading an eBook would. Learn which programs on your device use up a lot of energy and avoid using them when you can.

Avoid running too many programs simultaneously. Even if you don’t run any programs that are energy-intensive, running a lot of low-energy programs can kill your battery just as quickly. Multitask if you must, but know that you will need to compromise battery life to do so.

Turn off vibration. Most laptops don’t have a vibration feature, but nearly every mobile device does. While vibration might be preferred to lenovo thinkpad w510 keyboard a ringtone due to its quieter nature, it does use up a lot more energy. A ringtone only needs to produce a sound; vibration needs to throw around weights to shake up your entire device. When possible, switch away from vibration and rely on sounds for notifications.

Reduce the number of external devices. In particular, be careful which USB devices–like flash drives, keyboards, and mice–you are hooking up. lenovo thinkpad x220 keyboard Unhook USB devices when you’re finished with them rather than letting them idle while connected. Also, using your device to charge another device is a guaranteed way to quickly kill your battery.

Save a Laptop from Liquid Damage

Shut it off! Immediately remove the battery, the A/C adapter, and unplug the device after the spill. The biggest danger at first is the device shorting out. The electrolytic activity of combining electricity and liquids will begin as soon as the liquid contacts the powered circuits so removing the power and battery immediately is essential.

Disconnect and remove any and all external devices.

Turn it upside down immediately to stop the liquid from traveling deeper into the machine.

Clean up any part of the spill you can get to. Use paper towels or any absorbent material that is lint-free.

Inspect the keyboard. Some keyboards are designed to protect the internals from liquids:
Pour out any liquid contained in a keyboard enclosure.
Remove and clean an easily removable keyboard.

Wipe up anything sticky. This may include the screen, the keys on the keyboard, and any buttons. Use a clean, slightly dampened, lint-free cloth.

Insulate yourself from static discharge. Static electricity can be very high voltage. Static discharge from your hands and body can destroy even a dry computer. Learn how to Avoid Destroying a Computer With Electrostatic Discharge.

Disassemble the case. If you cannot get to the whole spill, then it may be necessary to remove the laptop’s case. Some spills can contain chemicals that can corrode internal circuit boards:
If you aren’t comfortable taking your device apart, then get it to someone who is, as soon as possible.
Pull the hard drive to protect your data.
Remove as many cards or drives as you can.

Remove dry residue. Use a toothbrush or lint-free cloth to gently remove any dried residue from non-water stains such as cola or coffee. Blow the residue away with compressed air, or use a vacuum cleaner with an adjustable power setting or bypass valve to ensure a gentle attempt is made at removing the residue when it has dried to a powder.

Rinse off the residue. If you spilled anything besides water on the laptop, rinsing it clean will be the most dramatic part. There are several ways to rinse your machine, depending on the kind of spill, and how much risk you are willing to endure:

Think about what has been spilled on/in your computer, and determine whether it is water soluble or petro-chemical based. In the case of the former, deionized water will work fine. If it is oily, etc., then rinse with denatured alcohol, and then rinse with deionized water.
Rinse with water. Take any components that have residue (a fresh spill or an old spill of cola) and rinse them under the tap. Most circuit boards and similar non-moving components handle water well, asus a53u keyboard as long as they are not powered. Some internal components with moving parts may not handle water well, for example, fans and CD/DVD drives.
Rinse with deionized or distilled water. Many people prefer to rinse with deionized water over tap water. Regular water will leave deposits that can cause electrical shorts, but deionized water will rinse clean, dry, and leave nothing behind.
Don’t get too carried away rinsing your machine. Water and laptops do not mix, either. Rinse as much as you need to, and not more. Carefully blot up excess water, if any.

Let it dry. Be completely sure that the parts are dry before you proceed. As with rinsing, there are different theories on drying:

Dry naturally. Prop the machine up, away from surfaces, so that air can circulate in and around the entire unit. Leave the machine to dry for 24 to 48 hours. While it is drying, place the laptop battery in a bowl of uncooked rice.
Dry with light heat. Place your deck on a warm radiator or on top of a warm sill or shelf – out of direct sunlight – or near other source of warmth. Do not use high levels of heat, just moderately warm sources of heat. Let it dry for 12 hours, or so. A nearby dehumidifier may improve drying time. High heat will drive moisture and humidity further into the device and will ensure ongoing problems as that moisture causes oxidation and corrosion.
Never use a hair dryer, as this will cause static problems and fill your machine with more contaminants and dust. A hair dryer at a high setting could also melt some of the plastic components. In extreme cases the hair dryer will drive moisture deeper into the circuits and components and that moisture will oxidize and create capacitive load connections under and inside of integrated circuits and connectors, eventually causing failure of the device. The best way to remove all residual moisture is to patiently draw it away with a vacuum cleaner held over the affected areas for up to 20 minutes in each accessible area, having already removed the majority of liquids and moisture manually and dried all visible moisture by hand, asus k53u keyboard so that none enters the vacuum cleaner. This method is preferable to leaving it to dry naturally as it halts any oxidation from occurring deep inside small surface mount components and connections, that can result in issues later on.

Clean with a solvent. A second rinse with a solvent-based cleaner is recommended by some, and abhorred by others. It is recommended if the unit has been sitting long enough to be subject to corrosion and oxidation before repair and cleaning is attempted. Always use gloves and ensure good room ventilation when handling any solvent or alcohol based cleaners as some are known carcinogens.

If you suspect that your first rinse did not remove all of the residue, a chemical rinse of this kind may be worth the risk. The advantages of such a rinse are: there is only one substance to apply and remove; that substance, typically, evaporates; long drying times are not required. The disadvantage is that, if you use the wrong solvents, you can literally dissolve your computer.
Buy and use 99% (not 90%) isopropyl alcohol. Never, ever use gasoline or acetone to clean computer parts.
Using a cotton swab and/or soft toothbrush, carefully rub or wipe each component of the board, until it is clean.
Try flux remover, a spray-on can available in electronics stores, rather than isopropyl alcohol.
The damage does not happen when the laptop gets wet, the damage occurs when the current from the battery short circuits due to the water which can really put you out a couple hundred dollars. Make sure the laptop is absolutely dry before turning it back on.

Put the laptop back together, and test it to see if it is working.

If the laptop doesn’t turn on, take it to a customer service center.

Hook Up a Laptop to a TV

Determine which video output port(s) your laptop has. There are several possible types; your laptop may have more than 1.

A VGA port is roughly rectangular with 15 pins in 3 rows of 5. It’s how you connect your laptop to a docking station.
An S-video port is circular with either 4 or 7 pins.
A composite video port is a circular jack, usually color-coded yellow.
A digital video interface (DVI) port is rectangular, with 24 pins in 3 rows of 8. It is designed for high-definition connections. hp g42 fan
A high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port resembles a USB port, but is longer and thinner. Available in laptops since 2008, it is also designed for high-definition connections.

See which video input port(s) your TV has. This will depend on whether your TV is a standard-definition or high-definition TV.

Standard-definition TVs usually have composite video or S-video ports. The display will not be as sharp as through your PC’s regular monitor, however. hp g7 fan
High-definition TVs may have VGA, DVI or HDMI ports. VGA connections provide an analog signal, while DVI and HDMI connections provide a digital signal of higher quality.

Get the right video cable to connect your laptop to your TV.

If your laptop’s output port is the same kind as your TV’s input port, get a cable with the same kind of connector on each end.
If your laptop’s output port and your TV’s input port are different, you’ll need an adapter cable. Adapters are available to convert DVI to HDMI or VGA to composite video. You can also get an adapter cable to connect your computer’s USB port to your TV’s HDMI port if your laptop has no HDMI port.

Obtain an audio cable if necessary. Some computers and high-definition TVs can connect to the TV’s audio and video with a single cable, while most require separate audio and video cables.

If your laptop is equipped with an HDMI port and an HDMI-enabled sound card, you don’t need a separate audio cable; otherwise, you do.
Your laptop’s audio output is a 3.5-mm jack marked with a headset icon. You can connect an audio cable from here to your TV’s audio input if it has one or to external speakers if it doesn’t.

Connecting Your Laptop to Your TV
Shut down your laptop.
Connect the video cable to your laptop and TV’s video ports.
Set your TV to the input coming from your laptop. Consult your TV’s user guide for instructions if necessary.
Turn your laptop on. You should see your startup screen.
Adjust the screen resolution if necessary. If you have connected to a high-definition TV, its 16:9 aspect ratio may cause the picture to be stretched. Use a screen resolution that matches this aspect ratio.
If you don’t see a recognizable image, you may have to disconnect your laptop temporarily and adjust your resolution before reconnecting your laptop to your TV.

Workaround Damaged Laptop Display Hinges

Display hinge damage, usually caused by a drop or fall, is a common reason leading to replacement of older, otherwise working, laptops. This article explains an inexpensive method, which doesn’t require specialized repair tools or skills, which can extend the life of a laptop if its display hinges are too weak to hold up the display. It isn’t for the case where the display has totally broken off the body of the laptop. lenovo u450p hinge

Read the entire article, and check that your specific laptop can be repaired in the way presented. Especially check that the fishing line can be placed in a location which doesn’t get too much in the way of your normal use (heavy users of the mouse buttons or touchpad might have problems here), and that there are locations more or less in the center of the laptop where gluing the Velcro will not affect the use of the laptop screen hinges (that no access doors or ventilation holes are sealed).

Cut two strips of the fuzzy Velcro and round the corners (rounding the corners will make it less likely that the Velcro will detach after gluing).

Read the instructions for the epoxy glue; mix it and use it to glue the two strips of fuzzy Velcro, one on the back of the display, and one on the bottom of the laptop, such that the two strips are co-linear (in other words, the alignment of one strip, when extended, coincides with the alignment of the other strip). Lenovo g460 hinge Try to make the line of the two strips be as perpendicular as possible to the axis of the display hinges.

Wait for the epoxy glue to harden fully. This can take 24 hours or even more. See the instructions for the particular epoxy you have used. Don’t confuse the setting time of the epoxy (which can be as quick as 5 minutes) with the time until it reaches maximum strength.

Close the laptop display, and cut a strip of the hooked Velcro more or less to the length required when sticking it to the two glued strips in their entirety. Actually, what is more important is that the length of the hooked strip totally utilize the glued strips when the laptop display is open. Do not use the Velcro with an open display before the glue has hardened to its maximum strength.

After the glue has hardened to maximum strength, check that the Velcro can now prevent the display from falling into the closed position. Laptops with large or heavy displays may require gluing multiple strips of Velcro, or wider and/or stronger Velcro (Velcro comes in a range of sizes and bonding strengths). The laptop in the images has a 12.1″ display.

Take the fishing line, and tie it into a loop which exactly encircles the laptop when the display is open to the working position. I used an “improved blood knot” for this. Instructions can be found in various places on the Internet.

Check that the fishing line loop is strong enough to prevent the display from falling into the fully open position (fishing line comes in a variety of strengths, use a relatively strong line which will not stretch under the load).

Glue a small strip of two-sided foam tape (like used for mounting things) on the edge of the laptop where the fishing line should rest. If it is a bother, make the adhesive on the outside less sticky by touching it repeatedly.

Optionally, you can use a plastic bag closure which has been notched (see images), in order to more easily adjust the exact size of the fishing line loop (and therefore, the exact working position of the laptop display).

Keep a toshiba laptop keyboard clean

Do not wash the keyboard, you might be shocked or damage it.

Use toshiba keyboard protective film. A good toshiba keyboard protective film can effectively reduce the wear and tear and prevent dust and debris from falling into the keyboard slots.

Wash your hands before using the laptop. The toshiba keyboard is the most easily soiled part on a laptop. In order to avoid the keyboard of oil, wash your hands before using your laptop, so as not to dirty the keyboard.

Do not be too “violent.” Many players use the laptop to play games, so a few frequently-used buttons tend to wear out more quickly than the other keys. Pay attention to the intensity of your typing if you use the keyboard frequently.

Use canned air to remove dust and particles. If you do not have canned air available, you can also use a hair dryer to remove dust, but note that the hair dryer must be set to “cool” so that it only blows cold air.

Do not eat or drink near, or over, the toshiba keyboard. Foreign bodies can fall into the cracks in a keyboard, which will affect normal use. Water and other liquids may lead to more serious consequences.

If the Key Cap and Key Retainer Have Fallen Off the toshiba Keyboard,Purchase the missing cap or retainer if you have lost them. Unsnap the cap from another key that is in working condition but leave the retainer connected. Take a close look at the 4 connecting points on the working retainer and compare it to the area where the damaged key used to be. Place the disconnected retainer the same way that you see the working retainer. Put the missing cap on top of the retainer so the letter on it reads correctly and snap it back in place.

If the Space Bar Has Fallen Off the Keyboard for toshiba. Use a flathead screwdriver to separate the retainer from the space bar key. Link the retainer with the hooks on the keyboard to return it to its proper place. Put the space bar key on top of the retainer and snap it in place.

If You Want to Use Another Key to Replace the One That is Lost Choose a key that you rarely use such as the “Scroll Lock” or one of the “Alt” keys. Pull on the key gently to remove it from its original place. Remove the retainer but make sure that the 2 pieces on the back are still connected. Use a sharp object to lift the membrane that was just under the key before you removed it. Apply strong glue at the bottom edge of the membrane. Place the membrane so that the glue sticks to the new area where you want the key to go. Add the key retainer above the membrane. Put the key cap above the retainer and give it a gentle push to snap it in place.

If you have many keys missing you may want to consider buying and installing an entirely new Toshiba keyboard. Make sure that you buy a toshiba keyboard that matches the exact make and model of your laptop.
If a key does not snap in place, turn it upside down and inspect the locking clips. A damaged locking clip will prevent a key from snapping in place in which case you will need to use another key.
Choosing the best method to repair toshiba laptop keyboard keys depends on the style and model of your laptop. Gather information about your particular laptop to decide which method is best for you.
Get your laptop repaired by the retailer or manufacturer if it is still under warranty with coverage for toshiba keyboard damage.

Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 keyboard most notable feature

One of the first notebook computers to include WiDi at retail is the $899 Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904, a model that’s exclusive to Best Buy. Though having WiDi included makes the E205-S1904 intriguing enough, we’re also excited because the last Best Buy exclusive design that Toshiba made, the E105-S1802, was one of our favorite Satellite laptops. We particularly liked it for incorporating a more comfortable keyboard and touch pad than are available in most mainstream Satellite models.

One of the biggest changes to the Toshiba Satellite E205 is cosmetic: whereas the E105 series had a clean, somewhat boring gray chassis and a solid, tapered keyboard, the E205 adopts a totally new look with a dark blue plastic finish (called Fusion Finish in metallic blue), rounded edges, and a slot-loading DVD drive. The laptop feels more plasticky and slightly less rugged than the E105, but it also looks trimmer, too. The E205 looks thin, but a lot of that is a visual effect produced by the extremely tapered edges along the sides and front. Still, the Satellite E205 is thinner than many full-size laptops at only 1.2 inches. A larger-than-normal rear hinge enables the 14-inch screen to open up at an angle that “floats” a little more off the keyboard than standard lids. The lid also opens up at a very wide angle.

Toshiba’s move to a flat backlit keyboard instead of the very comfortable tapered E105 keyboard is frustrating: it’s a return to the keyboard lineup available on most Satellites, and frankly, the flat keys leave something to be desired. Though the toshiba satellite E205  keyboard seemed to respond a little better than the keyboards on other Satellites we’ve reviewed, the main part of the keyboard still flexes too much for our taste. The multitouch touch pad beneath is smaller than the stiff-clicking buttons beneath, which is awkward–but the flush matte touch pad surface worked fine for us as we used the toshiba satellite E205-S1904 keyboard. A row of dedicated media touch-keys run down the right side of the keyboard, controlling audio, basic play functions, an Eco power utility, and backlighting.

The E205’s most notable feature, one we’ve profiled in great detail, is its Intel Wireless Display capability, or WiDi. The E205 can, with the assistance of a simple Toshiba software tool, send its video display to any TV with RCA or HDMI input jacks, courtesy of the included Netgear Push 2 TV box. The WiDi connection is akin to that of a Wi-Fi bridge, but has surprisingly decent clarity and can be initiated at the push of a button. Our initial tests worked well and at a far range, although a few subsequent tests had connection difficulties.

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p Screen Hinges, Keyboard, Touchpad

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U450p is their newest ultra-thin consumer-oriented notebook.
Build & Design

The U450p feels much lighter and thinner in the hand than a typical 14-inch notebook.

Lenovo IdeaPad U450P LCD Hinges & Keyboard & Touchpad

Lenovo IdeaPad U450P LCD Hinges  Part Number:
AM0A9000300
AM0A9000400

Lenovo IdeaPad U450P Screen HingesLenovo generally impresses with its keyboards and touchpads and the IdeaPad U450p is no exception.

The U450p has a traditional-style keyboard, as opposed to an island or “Chiclet”-style setup. It has very good

tactile feedback and a solid feel. Under normal typing pressure there is no flex. The keys have just the right

amount of travel and are very communicative as a result; it is easy to tell when a key is fully pressed and

keystrokes are registered. The keyboard is accurate and easy to type on quickly. The keys are made of solid-

feeling plastic and give a high-quality feel.

The keyboard is quiet enough to be used in just about any environment; it actually sounds quite nice, adding

to the tactile feedback.

The keyboard has a few oddities. On the plus side I liked the arched spacebar, arrow keys and rounded key

edges; they all enhanced the typing experience. On the minus side I found the layout to be somewhat odd; the

[Fn] and [Ctrl] keys in the bottom left corner are switched, which took getting used to. This is a holdover

from Lenovo’s business-oriented ThinkPad line; anyone who’s used a ThinkPad keyboard will feel right at home.

Additionally, the Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys on the right side of the keyboard have a non-standard arrangement

and also take getting used to.

The touchpad is rather small but works well. Its matte surface is appreciated since it is easy to track on

regardless of whether fingers are moist or dry. The touchpad buttons are quiet and have an excellent multi-

level feel.
I did not have any general tracking issues with the touchpad. It supports multi-touch features such as two-

finger scrolling and “pinching” to zoom but they work sporadically at best.

HP Pavilion dm4 laptop

hp pavilion dm4 lcd hinge

The good: Upscale design; powerful CPU; large touch pad; excellent battery life.
The bad: There are better midsize multimedia deals out there; app dock is loaded with advertising pitches.
The bottom line: HP’s latest multimedia system, the Pavilion dm4, is a powerful, slick-looking package–but some competitors in the same price range offer more features for less.
The middle-of-the-road multimedia laptops that come out of HP have always been excellent examples of the style. They typically bring some upscale design buzz–but not too much in the way of extra features or components–while keeping prices down.

Of those three, however, the HP dm4 has the slickest look, taking design elements, including a large multitouch touch pad, from the more expensive HP Envy series.
As a close cousin of the 13-inch HP dm3, the new dm4 shares a similar metallic body. But, rather than the brushed-metal look of the dm3, this model has an etched pattern of angular lines–almost like Nazca lines–along the wrist rest and back of the lid.

The gently rounded corners give the dm4 a soft, consumer-friendly look. The corners of the keyboard tray (and the four keys that sit closest to the corners) are similarly rounded, as is the oversized touch pad.

The keyboard is similar to the flat-topped, widely spaced keys we’ve seen on recent HP systems such as the hp Pavilion dm4 keyboard, although the larger 14-inch chassis allows for a better layout, including full-size arrow keys. Lacking any kind of dedicated media control buttons, all your media and alternate key functions are mapped to the row of Fn keys, although the assignments are reversed; using the traditional F4, F5, etc. functions requires holding down the Fn button.

The touch pad is similar to what we’ve seen on HP’s high-end Envy systems. It’s larger than usual, and the matte black surface is infinitely superior to the sticky mirrored pads we’ve seen on the past several generations of Pavilions. The touch pad, like Apple’s, eschews separate left and right mouse buttons, instead cordoning off two click zones in the lower left and right corners.

It’s a better touch pad than on the vast majority of non-MacBook laptops we’ve reviewed, but our main complaint is that some of the multitouch gestures are hard to use. Case in point, scrolling up and down pages using the two-finger method is hit or miss, unless your fingers are perfectly lined up on the horizontal plane. We noted that very same problem last year on the original HP Envy 13.

Like Dell, Asus, and other PC makers, HP includes a software dock along the top edge of the screen, presenting handy links to software and services in one place. The dock is user customizable, but its default settings are heavy on advertising come-ons from Snapfish, Norton, the HP Download Store, and others. Rhapsody link, yes; Web browser link, no.

The 14-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,366×768-pixel native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size. Though overly glossy, the display was clear and bright, with realistic color reproduction.
HP Pavilion dm4 Average for category [mainstream] Video VGA, HDMI VGA plus HDMI or DisplayPort Audio Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks Data 3 USB 2.0 (one USB/eSATA), SD card reader 4 USB 2.0, SD card reader, eSATA Expansion None ExpressCard/54 Networking Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional mobile broadband Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional mobile broadband Optical drive DVD burner DVD burner

Though the graphics card can be upgraded on the dm4 (for either $100 or $200), there’s no Blu-ray option, which is something that’s becoming increasingly common on 14- and 15-inch laptops. You can, however, add mobile broadband from Verizon Wireless, AT&T, or Sprint for $125.

The processor options range from Intel’s Core i5 to Core i7, and we had the middle-of-the-road 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 M520 in our review unit. That should be more than enough power for all but the most demanding users, and we were able to surf Web sites, play media files, and edit photos in Photoshop simultaneously with no stuttering or slowdown.

With only integrated Intel graphics capabilities, you’re not going to be doing any gaming beyond FarmVille on this system, unless you add one of the optional discrete ATI graphics cards (which our system lacked).

Clean a Cpu Fan

Failing to clean your CPU fan can cause the fan to either slow down or to fail completely. If the fan fails, then the temperatures inside the CPU case will significantly increase, which creates the potential for overheating. The easiest way to clean a CPU fan is to use a can of compressed air.

Shut down your PC and turn the power off. Remove the power cords from the rear of the tower and disconnect them from their power source.

Place the tower on top of an antistatic mat that has been laid on top of a table. You may also wear an antistatic wristband that is connected to an electrical ground, like a metal plumbing fixture. You’ll need to use the antistatic devices because static discharge from the floor or from your body could damage data stored on the computer.

Open the back of the computer case according to the directions in your owner’s manual. Some CPU’s will require screwdrivers for removal, while others will have buttons to depress before the back comes off.

Position your can of compressed air at least two inches from the surface that you are cleaning.

Clean the fan intakes and the exhaust using short puffs of canned air. The intakes are the grid-like structures that filter the air that comes into the fan.

Spray short puffs of canned air over the fan blades. To loosen clumps of dirt, hold your canned air at multiple angles rather than using long bursts of air. Make sure that you do not touch anything inside of the CPU tower.

Set the canned air aside and close the back of your CPU.

Clean the exterior of your CPU with a damp cloth that has been dipped in soapy, lukewarm water. Dry the surface with a soft towel.

Use a damp cloth to clean your power cords while they are disconnected from a power source. Dry the power cords with a soft towel.

Return the power cords to their correct positions and power up your computer.
